Saturday

We arrived in Washburn about 2:00 and spent the afternoon with Jeff Carlson. You girls are in for a treat when you Skype with him on Monday and Tuesday; you will learn so much from him! He gave us a tour of the reconstructed Fort Mandan and taught us about the expedition and its members. He has a wealth of knowledge! We had a wonderful afternoon.

Here are a few pictures from the day.

    1. It is, Maddie :) It reminds us of the dog Captain Lewis brought on the expedition. He was big, too (but not that big).

    1. It is a Newfoundland...good job! Newfoundlands are usually a good choice for people traveling by boat because they almost always like water. Captain Lewis bought his Newfoundland for $20 in 1803.

    1. Wow, Hayden...you know your Lewis and Clark story! For a long time, people thought Meriwether Lewis's dog was named Scannon. Then, one day, someone found a map with a river the Captains named "Seaman's Creek." Now, we're pretty sure that was named after the dog.

    1. The statues of the three men are Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and Sheheke (a Mandan chief that came back to Washington, D.C. with the Corps of Discovery after the expedition). Later, when he returned to his village, almost no one believed the stories he told about what he saw in the United States!

  7. Did you know: One of the first times Captain Lewis wrote about Seaman in his journal, the dog was jumping off the keelboat to fetch squirrels that were trying to swim across the river. It's true!
