Questions and Comments
Many of you had questions during Skyping at the fort. Jeff was able to answer some of them, but we ran out of time. Here's a place for you to post questions and comments about what you heard and saw today.
Well, Hayden, that's tough to say. It looks like he came back with the Corps of Discovery. He's mentioned in the Captains' journals on the way back. That's the last we know of him for sure.
Not too much is known about Lisette, Ananya. I can tell you she was younger than Jean Baptiste. Like her older brother, she was educated in St. Louis under the supervision of Captain Clark. After that, we kind of lose track of her. Maybe, someday, you can become the sleuth who tracks down more information about her!
Well, Juliana, that's a question swith a LOT of answers. There were over forty men on the Expedition and none of them died on the same day. Did you have a certain Expedition member in mind?
Juliana, that was Private Thomas Howard. Unfortunately, you've picked someone that we don't have a definite birth date or a death date for. He was born sometime in 1779. It's not known when he died. Can you imagine that?!
Once construction started, the people who rebuilt the fort worked on and off for an entire summer. There was time spent before that to gather and prepare materials. It definitely took longer than the six weeks it took the Expedition!
Sophie, when Jean Baptiste got older and returned West, he spent time as a mountain man and as a guide. So, yes, he did some exploring, but he also helped other people explore places he already knew.
1. Captain Clark died September 1, 1838. He was 68 years old. 2. The Corps of Discovery returned to St. Louis September 23, 1806. 3. There is more than one possible year given for Sacagawea's death, but the most common is 1812. She was probably about 25 or 26 years old. Toussaint Charbonneau died in around the year 1843. He would have been 76 years old. 4.
Sacagawea was young when she died how did they spend time when someone dies? If Sacagawea was older when she died she could have lived to tell her tales i wish she was still alive today i would totally want to see or talk to her!
Thanks for letting me know, Mr.Jeff. When Louis and Clark passed away, was there any kind of special funeral? If so, what was it? And what about the whole expidetion, and Sacagawea and Charbonneau? What was the name of the guy that was reported to have died along the way? Sorry! I have a lot of questions! Tukwa
Where was Louis and Clark buried? York and Seamon? What about Charbonneau,Sacagawea, Jean Babtiste, And Lissette? Were Sacagawea and Charbonneau buried where the Shoshone Indians were? Can you name some of the Louis and Clark museums in Dallas,Texas or in any other part of the U.S? I really want to go! Sorry, I'm just really curious! TUKWA:)
Wow, Tukwa...you are very curious! Here are answers to the questions I don't have to research:
1. There was no special funeral for Captain Lewis. He was buried near the Inn where he died (in Tennessee).
2. The Expedition member who died along the way was Charles Floyd. At the time, he was one of the Expedition's three Sergeants. He was buried in what is now Iowa.
3. Jean Baptiste died in the 1860s in what is now the state of Oregon (near the town of Danner...can you find it on a map?). He was in his sixties.
4. I don't know of any Lewis & Clark museums in Dallas. Most of them are located along the route the Expedition traveled. Besides here, the ones I know the most about are around St. Louis, MO, Great Falls, MT, and Astoria Oregon. Here are websites for those:
Maddie: In 1803, Clark wrote a letter to Lewis from Clarksville, telling him that he would join the Expedition. Clarksville is in Indiana (then the Indiana Territory).
Yes, Emily, York was given a gun to hunt during the Expedition. This is something that probably never would have happened when he was living with Clark back East. York's hunting during the Expedition was probably not for Clark alone, but for the group as a whole. The Corps of Discovery's hunters usually hunted to get food for everyone to share.
The youngest Expedition member was Sacagawea. She was probably 15 or 16 when her husband was hired. The youngest man on the trip was George Shannon. He was only about 18 when he was recruited!
Captain Lewis died of gunshot wounds at an inn along a road called the Natchez Trace in Tennessee. Captain Clark died of old age (or, what was an old age then).
Generally, people didn't live quite as long back then. We have much better medicines and doctors now (and we know how to eat in healthier ways). I think all of these things have helped people live longer now than they did in Captain Clark's time.
Riya, I want you to use your math skills to figure this out......hint....you can use the timeline in the room, or look in one of our Lewis and Clark books!
I have a question is there anything left from the actual expedition of lewis and clark. And here is one more question for you did lewis and clark live a llong healthy life. And here is a joke. Does lewis bring rain or sunshines if your answer was sunshine your riht because his name is merry wether lewis. TADA!
Arden, there are some things left from the Expedition, but not too many. I know that some of Captain Lewis's plant specimens, his air rifle, some of Captain Clark's maps, and journals written by different Expedition members still exist. They are located in a lot of different places around the country.
The answer to your question about the Captains living a long, healthy life can be found somewhere else on this page. Can you find it?
Emily, I think that they would just use fire and animal skin/hide. Animal hides are very warm. Think about it.....the animals live out in the cold. Their hides are thick, and they also have fur that keeps them warm.
Right you are, Mrs. Roberts! I've seen buffalo out in ND's National Park standing around eating for hours on days that are VERY cold. Their hair gets thicker in the winter, too, helping them adjust to the colder temperatures. Ever seen a picture of a buffalo that looks like it's losing some of its hair? That's probably a springtime picture. They shed when the weather gets warmer.
The day we Skyped from the Fort, Alexis asked a question that I haven't answered, yet. She wondered, "When Sacagawea and Charbonneau had Jean Baptiste, did Charbonneau's other wife think of that as her child, too?" I thought it was a great questions, but I didn't know how to answer it then.
After spending some time looking for an answer, here's what I found out: Native people like the Mandans looked at family relationships a bit differently than we do. While they remembered who certain children were born to, they didn't necessarily think of that child as belonging only to those two parents.
Instead, older people in a lodge or family (the elders) would all have the responsibility of raising, protecting, and teaching the child. So, in that way, Charbonneau's other wife may have felt some duty to help raise Jean Baptiste. But she probably would have felt the same way about children born to her sister, too.
I hope that answers your question, Alexis. Thanks for your patience...and for your good thinking! :)
Let me answer your question with a question, Campbell:
If you were building a fort and it was getting really cold, would you build a fort that was a triangle, a square, a rectangle, a pentagon, or some other shape? Why?
Lewis and Clark's North Dakota fort only had one name, Lindsay. The fort they built near St. Louis had more than one, though. Can you discover any of them?
He didn't like some of the rules that Lewis and Clark had. He did quit, but only for a short time. Later, he asked if he could come back. The Captains said yes.
At least I was not alive back then because I don't want to get frost bite! I feel sad for the people that were alive back then and got frost bite. OK kids, time to see the amputation knife! Here comes torture time! Juliana:( P.S. To answer Campbell's question about why they cut off the peoples feet was it is better then the toe getting infected and falling off thats for sure.
Olivia, I want you to do that research. When you are in social studies next week I want you to use the iPad to see what you can learn. I'll help you figure out what key words you should use in your search. :)
Claire, neither of the Captains were married when they went on the Expedition. Captain Clark got married after he got back. He married the person he named the "Judith River" after during the trip. Captain Lewis was never married, but remember...he died pretty young.
Sometimes they followed the same trail. Sometimes they didn't. At one point, Lewis and Clark split up so Captain ewis could explore the Marias River to the North and Captain Clark could follow the Yellowstone River back to the Missouri. Can you find both of these rivers on a map (they still have the same names today)?
Just before the Expedition, Captain Lewis was living with President Jefferson in the White House (but he was born in Virginia - near the town of Charlottesville). Just before the Expedition, Captain Clark was in Clarksville in the Indiana Territory (but he was also born in Virginia).
Yes. Many people would say St. Louis was the starting point of the Expedition, so that's where many people go to learn about it. St. Louis's silver arch is sometimes called the "Gateway Arch." What do you think St. Louis might have been a gateway to for people living in the time of Lewis and Clark?
Well, Maddie, that depends. Are you looking for a book for yourself. Or are you looking to recommend something to your Mom or Dad (or Grandma...or Grandpa...)?
Great question, Eleanor! The fact that William Clark named a child after Meriwether Lewis sure would make you think so, wouldn't it?! After all they had been through together, they definitely had a lot of respect for one another. Their jobs after the Expedition kept them busy and apart, so keeping that "closeness" was a challenge.
How old was Seaman when he died?
ReplyDeleteHayden
Well, Hayden, that's tough to say. It looks like he came back with the Corps of Discovery. He's mentioned in the Captains' journals on the way back. That's the last we know of him for sure.
DeleteCan you tell me more about Liset? She sounds very interesting.
ReplyDeleteAnanya
Not too much is known about Lisette, Ananya. I can tell you she was younger than Jean Baptiste. Like her older brother, she was educated in St. Louis under the supervision of Captain Clark. After that, we kind of lose track of her. Maybe, someday, you can become the sleuth who tracks down more information about her!
DeleteWho is Lisette? I wasn't there when you Skpyed on Tuesday so could you tell me a little bit about Lisette?
DeleteLauren:D :) :D
Who is Lisette? I don't remember you mentioning Lisette, if you did. Julia
DeleteLaura, Lisette was Sacagawea's girl who was born after the expedition (I think).
DeleteShe was Little Pomp's little sister. She was born after the trip.
DeleteClaire
Lauren, Lisette was Sacagawea's second child...this time, a daughter.
DeleteWhen did Lewis die?
ReplyDeleteLea:) :):)
Sadly, Meriwether Lewis died in 1809, just over three years after he got back to St. Louis after the Expedition. He was still a young man. :(
Deletethat is so sad!!
Delete:(:(:(:(:(
Lea
Awwwwwwwww that is sad-Anne
DeleteEspecially for MEEE!!!!
DeleteJuliana :(
Still young? That's so sad!!!
Delete- Allison
How old was Lewis when he died?-Anne
ReplyDeleteMeriwether Lewis was just thirty-five years old when he died.
DeleteThat is super sad -anne
DeleteWhen did the soldiers die?
ReplyDeleteJuliana
Well, Juliana, that's a question swith a LOT of answers. There were over forty men on the Expedition and none of them died on the same day. Did you have a certain Expedition member in mind?
DeleteYes. This person that crawled over the fence of fort Mandan and lead in Indian in to the camp. I forgot what is name was.
DeleteJuliana
Juliana, that was Private Thomas Howard. Unfortunately, you've picked someone that we don't have a definite birth date or a death date for. He was born sometime in 1779. It's not known when he died. Can you imagine that?!
DeleteYes, but I can't believe it! Can you double check or have you already have? It is okay if the death reamains anonymous.
DeleteJuliana :0
The best guess is that he died by March of 1814. He was around the same age as Captain Lewis when he died.
DeleteHow long did it take to rebuild fort mandan?-Jeff, this is the question I asked while skyping- please answer.
ReplyDeleteKatherine Grace
Katherine Grace,
DeleteOnce construction started, the people who rebuilt the fort worked on and off for an entire summer. There was time spent before that to gather and prepare materials. It definitely took longer than the six weeks it took the Expedition!
Thanks for answering my question Jeff!
DeleteKatherine Grace
You're welcome! If you come up with others, let me know :)

ReplyDelete-Sophie
Sophie, when Jean Baptiste got older and returned West, he spent time as a mountain man and as a guide. So, yes, he did some exploring, but he also helped other people explore places he already knew.

Where did Clark come from when Lewis asked him to be on the trip. ( I am Clark and I would like to know)
ReplyDeleteMaddie
Maddie:
DeleteIn 1803, Clark wrote a letter to Lewis from Clarksville, telling him that he would join the Expedition. Clarksville is in Indiana (then the Indiana Territory).
How big was Fort Mandan?
ReplyDelete-Payton
The sides that included Fort Mandan's cabins were about 100 feet long, Payton.

DeleteWas it ever hot on the trip?-Emily
DeleteNo, Emily. When Mrs. Wilensky and I were there it was not hot at all! I think that the highest temperature we had the whole time was the upper 20s.
DeleteHow old was Clark when he died?
ReplyDelete- Allison
Sorry, I must have missed your question, Allison. William Clark was born in 1770. He died in 1838. So, you tell me...how old was he?
DeleteI would subtract 1838 from 1770 to find the age of his death?
DeleteAllison
Close, Allison! You would subtract 1770 from 1838 to get the correct age. So, what's the answer? :)
DeleteThe day we Skyped from the Fort, Alexis asked a question that I haven't answered, yet. She wondered, "When Sacagawea and Charbonneau had Jean Baptiste, did Charbonneau's other wife think of that as her child, too?" I thought it was a great questions, but I didn't know how to answer it then.

Why is the Fort shaped like a triangle and not another shape?
ReplyDelete-Campbell:)
Let me answer your question with a question, Campbell:
DeleteIf you were building a fort and it was getting really cold, would you build a fort that was a triangle, a square, a rectangle, a pentagon, or some other shape? Why?
I would do a triangle because, it would take less time because there was not as many sides to bild.
DeleteAlexis
I too would make a triangle because it has less sides and they could be warmer because the triangle would be close together.
Delete-Campbell:)
Those are both good thoughts, Campbell. I think you just might be right! :)
DeleteI like your soldier costume where did you get it!
ReplyDeleteLea:)
It belongs to Fort Mandan, Lea. Maybe someday I'll have one of my own.
Deletewho was the oldest person who went on the trip?-Anne
ReplyDeleteI know who was the oldest on the trip. I read his name in a book once but I forgot. Sorry Anne:(
DeleteJuliana:(

Thanks, Arden (and Juliana)...I just might do that! :)

ReplyDeleteRiya:)
You're right, Riya...her name was Lisette. There's more about her somewhere in the blog. Can you find it?
DeleteMy dad told me that the arch in St. Louis is a landmark of where Lewis and Clark started the expedition. Is that true?
ReplyDeleteLucy
Yes. Many people would say St. Louis was the starting point of the Expedition, so that's where many people go to learn about it. St. Louis's silver arch is sometimes called the "Gateway Arch." What do you think St. Louis might have been a gateway to for people living in the time of Lewis and Clark?
DeleteWhat book do you reccomend do read about Lewis and Clark? (Oops, I mean CLARK and Lewis!)
ReplyDeleteWell, Maddie, that depends. Are you looking for a book for yourself. Or are you looking to recommend something to your Mom or Dad (or Grandma...or Grandpa...)?
