I wonder why......

When Thomas Jefferson and Meriwether Lewis began planning the Expedition they made a list of supplies and equipment they would need and the cost of each item. Lewis ordered cups without handles, but he never wrote why.

Why do you think he wanted cups without handles?


What are three other important things you think they would have been sure to put on the list?

    Maybe he wanted the cups like that because he thought that the cups would be bigger.

    I think he would have not wanted the handles on the cups because they would take up more space in their bags. They probably would have wanted blankets, guns, and powder also. Eleanor

    Maybe they were very low on metal, and they had to make the cups. So maybe he didn't want to spend so much metal. Julia

    somtimes it wil be too cold for their fingers to bend so much, so if it didn't have handles it would be easier.

    I think they ordered cups with no handles because maybe it would be less weight?
    I think the three other important things should be guns, candles, and flint and steel.

    Cups without handles would probably be a lot cheaper. Plus cups without handles would take up less space in their bags. Joni

    I think the cups have no handles because they could hold them easier, and so the cups would fit if they took them home.-Kendall

    Maybe the cups are for storing small things or things like gunpowder, and metal might of cost alot back then, so they didn't buy handles.Plus, handles aren't a necesity to have on cups.Cups are fine without them.
