Here are four questions from today's lesson:
Why were there 15 stars and 15 stripes on the flag at Fort Mandan?
Why did Fort Mandan only have three sides?
Why didn't the men sleep on the floor in the rooms?
Captain Clark was the main mapmaker on the expedition. One of his jobs was to figure the distance between different locations as they traveled. About how many miles off was his estimation from St. Louis to Fort Clatsop (Pacific Ocean)?

Yes, there were 15 stars and 15 stripes on the flag. They represented the 15 states that belonged to the United States during the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
ReplyDeleteWhen we first walked you into the fort was when Jeff talked with you about why the fort was three-sided. See if you can remember what he said.

Lewis and Clark's flag had fifteen stars and fifteen stripes, but there were actually seventeen states then. The two states not represented on the flag were Tennessee and Ohio.
ReplyDeleteWhile the U.S. flag in Lewis and Clark's time had only 15 stars and 15 stripes, there were actually 17 states then. Tennessee and Ohio were states, but hadn't been added to the flag yet.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I didn't say this during our fort tour the other day, but the floor would have been a REALLY cold place to sleep, too!
ReplyDeleteWow!I didn't know that! But wasn't there a person tending to the fire to keep warm? Julia
DeleteGood memory, Julia! There was someone tending the fire. Since that was true, sleeping people filling the floor would have caused another problem. Can you think of what it might be?
DeleteThen the person who was tending the fire might trip over all those people on the floor and fall into the fire!Hannah:D
DeleteAlso the fire tender could be clumsy and AXEDENTALLY set a man on fire.:(:(!!!:0:l
DeleteThere where only 15 states in the U.S claimed!
