On this date......
On this date in 1803, Congress approved Thomas Jefferson’s secret mission to explore the West, and the Corps of Discovery was officially "a go."
The Expedition was a secret until the Louisiana Purchase was completed. Before that, the lands that made up the purchase were claimed by the Spanish, French, and British. It wouldn't have been too popular to send army men from the United States there, but President Jefferson was still planning to. The Expedition was so secret, in fact, that Captin Lewis once wrote to Captain Clark, telling him to recruit men by saying they would be going up the Mississippi River, instead. He said they could tell them the truth later!
That's cool. Why do you think the mission was supposed to be secret.

Cool. Since when was it a secret mission?
ReplyDeleteWhy would you want it to be a secret mission? It wasn't a secret forever.
