Silver Jefferson medals like this one were minted in Philadelphia and passed out during the Expedition. What do you think they hoped to accomplish by giving these to the people they met along the way? Why do you think a medal was chosen instead of something else?
I think it is a peace medal. Mabye Lewis and Clark traded it to the Indians.

Maybe because it showed peace so the Indians would not be afraid of the Lewis and Clark expodition crew and maybe since Thomas Jefferson was important they thought if the Indians saw it they would know it was given by an important person.
ReplyDeleteThey wanted them to be friends because they were going to tell them that they owned their land.

ReplyDeleteThe medals were meant to be symbols of peace and friendship. They were given as gifts to Chiefs identified by Lewis and Clark. Medals were chosen because they had been passed out to the tribes by European countries before Lewis and Clark. So, the Indians were kind of used to them. In some tribes (but not all), the medals were valued by the people who received them, and they wore them proudly long after they were given.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean wore was it a bracelet?
