On this day.....

Pilgrimage day! It was 6 degrees this morning in 1805, but several Mandans headed out to Medicine Rock to pray and receive predictions about the coming year.

According to the dictionary a pilgrimage is 1) a journey to some sacred place as an act of religious devotions 2) a long journey.

What is your favorite pilgrimage place?

  7. Yes, girls, six degrees is pretty cold...especially if you're from Texas! :)

The Mandans were used to the cold temperatures, though. They had adapted to them (just like they adapted their gardening practices) over hundreds of years. In fact, Mandan boys were known to hop across the Missouri River's broken ice in the spring to catch dead buffalo floating down the river. Sometimes, they had to jump in the water to fish them out. What do you think they meant to do with them?

  8. Why would they want to go when it was THAT cold? Did they ever get frost bite on the way?
