February 19, 1806

Today in 1806, President Jefferson forwarded to Congress Lewis & Clark’s update from Fort Mandan. He must have been proud to relate to Congress what they had accomplished. Why do you think Jefferson would be proud?

  5. It was President Jefferson's idea. And his dream. He had been trying to get an expedition into the West for a long time. Did you know: Long before he was President, one of the first people Thomas Jefferson asked to lead a Western expedition was George Rogers Clark...William Clark's older brother!

  6. Do you think that President Thomas Jefferson wanted to do the expedition but had more important things going on at that time?
