On this date......

On this date in 1803, Congress approved Thomas Jefferson’s secret mission to explore the West, and the Corps of Discovery was officially "a go."

Medal

Silver Jefferson medals like this one were minted in Philadelphia and passed out during the Expedition. What do you think they hoped to accomplish by giving these to the people they met along the way? Why do you think a medal was chosen instead of something else?

All the way from North Dakota......

From Jeff Carlson (Interpreter at Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center):

Soon, a group of 3rd graders will get to see this program all the way from Texas (Hello, Hockaday!). Have you seen it? If not, these three words will give you a hint what it's all about: CONVENIENCE, CONSISTENCY, and COINCIDENCE.

On this day.....

Pilgrimage day! It was 6 degrees this morning in 1805, but several Mandans headed out to Medicine Rock to pray and receive predictions about the coming year.

According to the dictionary a pilgrimage is 1) a journey to some sacred place as an act of religious devotions 2) a long journey.

What is your favorite pilgrimage place?

February 19, 1806

Today in 1806, President Jefferson forwarded to Congress Lewis & Clark’s update from Fort Mandan. He must have been proud to relate to Congress what they had accomplished. Why do you think Jefferson would be proud?

Little Pomp

From the Lewis and Clark Fort Mandan Foundation:

February 11, 1805

Happy birthday, little Pomp! Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, the son of Toussaint and Sacagawea, was probably born in a room very much like this, 208 years ago today.

Lewis and Clark Adventure

I am so excited to be a part of this adventure, and I am looking forward to learning many new things that I can share with you girls.

February 4, 1805

William Clark and eighteen men began hiking downstream from Fort Mandan. They vowed to go as far as the Cannonball River (ninety-eight miles away!) in search of meat.

For what food or restaurant would you walk ninety-eight miles to enjoy?
